New Infectious Diseases and Diagnostics Center Opens in Šiauliai

May 08, 2026

Yesterday in Šiauliai, the newly completed Infectious Diseases and Diagnostics Center was officially opened. Built on a nearly 8‑hectare site, the 6,440 sq m facility will be able to treat 74 patients simultaneously, with 119 medical professionals working per shift.

According to the CEO of the project’s general contractor, Gilesta, this is one of the most modern healthcare facilities in Lithuania — a project whose need had been felt for some time and which, according to the Acting Director of Republican Šiauliai Hospital, will fundamentally transform patient experience and service quality.

“For patients, this means safer, faster, and higher‑quality care. The facility allows patient flows to be separated, isolation to be ensured, and other medical services to continue without interruption — which is especially important in preventing complications and maintaining access to healthcare for everyone. In practice, the entire patient journey changes — from arrival to treatment. Modern infrastructure enables efficient flow management, reduces the risk of infection spread, and ensures that even during a pandemic, scheduled services do not have to be suspended,” says Nerijus Rūkštelis, Acting Director of Republican Šiauliai Hospital.

The building houses key departments, including admissions and emergency care with observation beds, infectious diseases wards, resuscitation and intensive care units, as well as radiology and hemodialysis facilities.
The center is equipped with extensive engineering infrastructure — ranging from medical gas systems, radiation safety, and process automation to water supply, wastewater, electrical, and communications systems, all ensuring the smooth operation of medical and technical processes.

According to Romas Paliulis, CEO of general contractor Gilesta, the value of the project lies not only in its technology or scale:

“In projects like this, the most important factor is how all systems work together. We are talking about dozens of engineering solutions operating as one integrated system within the Šiauliai Infectious Diseases and Diagnostics Center — ensuring a high level of medical services and creating the best possible working conditions for healthcare professionals.”

The center meets the highest standards for modern medical facilities. The building has achieved A++ energy efficiency class, and its entire infrastructure — from more than three kilometers of electrical networks to large‑diameter wastewater systems — has been designed to ensure uninterrupted operation.
The facility complies with Fire Resistance Class I, includes acoustic comfort solutions, and offers over 100 parking spaces within the site.
